Lightning-Blue Jackets Game 3 live playoff updates - Tampa Bay Times

It hardly seems fair that the Blue Jackets’ regulation victory Thursday counts the same as the five-overtime battle in which the Lightning triumphed two nights earlier.

But that’s playoff hockey. So, here we are, the first-round series tied 1-1 heading to Game 3 tonight in Toronto.

Columbus goalie Joonas Korpisalo has been the standout so far, with 121 saves — a two-game playoff record — on 125 shots faced. By collapsing in their zone, the Blue Jackets have made it difficult for the Lightning to get shots through to the net and even harder to reach rebounds.

Lightning forward Pat Maroon, who won a Stanley Cup last season with the Blues, said Friday he and his teammates need to do a better job of getting to the net and creating distractions in front of Korpisalo.

They also need to take advantage of their man-advantage situations, failing to score on their first six power-play opportunities while yielding two power-play goals to a Columbus team that ranked among the NHL’s worst in such situations during the regular season.

Will they be successful? Follow along with us tonight, starting at 7:30, to find out as they Lightning attempt to regain the series lead.

FINAL SCORE: Lightning 3, Blue Jackets 2

Third period

Blue Jackets goal. That blur you saw was Eric Robinson coming off the bench, shooting from high above the circles, then getting to the rebound in the lower left circle and beating Andrei Vasilevskiy over the right pad to bring Columbus back to within a goal (1:37). Lightning 3, Blue Jackets 2.

Nikita Kucherov and Ondrej Palat both with great chances in front of the net, but neither can get the puck past Joonas Korpisalo.

Korpisalo makes a save on a sharp Kucherov shot from the left circle with just over 7 minutes remaining.

Ryan McDonagh has a chance from the slot, but Korpisalo turns him away.

Yanni Gourde steals and shoots, but it’s knocked aside by Korpisalo.

Blue Jackets pull Korpisalo for an extra attacker with about 1:30 left.

Point hits the right post with the net empty.

And that’s it. The Lightning wins 3-2 to take a 2-1 series lead.

Second period

Andrei Vasilevskiy reacted quickly to smoother a David Savard shot that bounced off the end boards behind him into the back of his skate.

Blue Jackets goal. Riley Nash ties the game off the rush with a shot over Vasilevskiy’s glove from the left faceoff dot. Gustav Nyqvist created the opportunity when he won the puck from Lightning defenseman Erik Cernak along the side boards in the Lightning end (1:49). Lightning 1, Blue Jackets 1.

And there’s Nyqvist again, drawing a hooking penalty by Victor Hedman.

The Lightning penalty kill is again up to the challenge, holding the Blue Jackets without a shot.

Tampa Bay goes on the power play for the first time as Alexander Wennberg is called for holding Alex Killorn with 14:08 to play in the period.

Joonas Korpisalo gloves a shot from the point from Mikhail Sergachev, again playing on the top power-play unit in place of Hedman.

Nikita Kucherov misses wide from the right circle, his first shot attempt of the game.

Tampa Bay records two shots on the power play, but Columbus kills it.

Kucherov has a chance in front of the Columbus net, but the pass hits him high and he can’t get off much of a shot because of a bouncing puck.

Korpisalo with an outstanding skate save to prevent a Grade-A chance from Barclay Goodrow in front of the Columbus net with just over 8 minutes remaining in the period after the puck ricocheted off the end boards.

Lightning goal! Brayden Point scores on a rebound to put Tampa Bay back ahead. After Point wins a faceoff in the Columbus end, Nikita Kucherov passes to Ryan McDonagh in the left circle. Korpisalo blocks McDonagh’s shot off the shoulder, but the puck caroms to the goaltender’s left and Point pounces on the loose puck (14:16). Lightning 2, Blue Jackets 1.

Lightning goal! Victor Hedman scores off the rush less than five minutes later to extend the lead to two goals. Carter Verhaeghe, making his first playoff start, finds Hedman with a pass between the circles, and he beats Korpisalo under the arm (18:53). Lightning 3, Blue Jackets 1.

First period

Less than a minute and a half into the game, and we’ve already got a scrum in front of the Blue Jackets net. It started with Pat Maroon crashing into Columbus defenseman Dean Kukan.

Maroon is penalized for roughing.

Dangerous play by Mikhail Sergachev, who loses the puck right in front of the Lightning net after trying to backhand a pass up the middle of the ice. Nearly results in a scoring chance for Columbus’ Emil Bemstrom.

Lightning kills the Maroon penalty. Blue Jackets recorded one shot on the power play.

Brayden Point pass just misses Ondrej Palat in front of the Columbus net.

Another Lightning penalty, as Zach Bogosian trips Oliver Bjorkstrand with 12:53 left in the period.

It quickly goes from bad to worse for the Lightning, as Blake Coleman is whistled for slashing Alexandre Texier. Blue Jackets will have a 5-on-3 advantage for 1:26.

Bemstrom hits outside of goalpost from lower left circle with wide open net.

Zach Werenski backdoor pass just misses Bemstrom.

Andrei Vasilevskiy stops Werenski from the right circle.

Victor Hedman lunges to break up a Werenski pass for Liam Foudy on the back post.

Anthony Cirelli skates with the puck out from behind the Lightning net, and the Bolts have killed both penalties.

Blue Jackets, who have had three power plays, outshooting the Lightning 9-2 over the first 12 minutes.

Lightning defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk narrowly misses hitting Maroon with a pass in front of the Columbus net.

Vasilevskiy stops Devin Shore blast from the left circle.

Lightning goal! Alex Killorn scores on a 2-on-1 with Anthony Cirelli after Cirelli stole the puck from Foudy at the Lightning blue line. Killorn faked a pass to Cirelli, then beat goaltender Joonas Korpisalo with a backhand shot between the legs (15:38). Lightning 1, Blue Jackets 0.

Pregame

Lightning forward Carter Verhaeghe is out on the ice for warmups. Mitchell Stephens is not. Defenseman Luke Schenn skating, as well.

Verhaeghe will get the start, in place of Stephens on the fourth line.

Steven Stamkos remains out of the lineup.

The rest of the lineup is the same as in Game 2.

Blue Jackets going with the same lines they used in their 3-1 victory in Game 2.
