Game On: Animated Alpha Betas Will Be Powered By YouTube Stars - Vanity Fair

“I can say that I don’t like the term ‘influencer.’ I feel like it has like a really high ‘role model’ aspect to it. No matter what you say, there’s always follow-up questions. It’s like, ‘Oh, what do you do?’ ‘I’m a YouTuber.’ ‘But what kind of YouTuber?’ I can tell you I play video games; that’s what I do to simplify it. But, I don’t know. I’m a video-gaming YouTuber personality.

“Like, every Uber driver has a million questions. [laughs] That’s the big one. Relatives and people above my generation usually need to have it explained, if they aren’t super tech savvy or on the internet very often. They always follow up with, ‘Oh, my nephew plays video games all the time. I’m going to have him start [a channel].’ Well, it’s not quite that simple, but go for it. You know, by all means…

“People always expect [instant success.] ‘I’ve posted four videos, and they’re not getting the traction that they should!’ You’ve got to improve your concept on the way, see what works and what doesn’t work. And above all, I think you have to collaborate and team up with people around your size. If you’ve got three fans and he’s got three fans, now you’ve got six and then he brings someone else in, now you’ve got nine, 12. And that just keeps growing and growing.

“As I approached a million subscribers, I think my monthly paycheck was $2,000 to $3,000 a month maybe. But it all comes down to views, obviously. Subscribers aren’t the end all, be all, it’s just the potential click on a video. Then your money doubles early from 1 million [subscribers] to 2 million, 2 million to 4 million…I think I just hit the ‘I could buy a really nice car for myself’ area. [laughs] I haven’t quite picked one out yet.”

Real name: Brian Hanby, 29 Channel subscribers: 3.53 million Alpha Betas character: Buck. “He has a little bit of a temper. In my world, when we’re playing games, I get competitive. We throw that into Buck as a character. The more frustrated he gets, the stronger my Irish accent gets.

“This new wave of online-persona celebrity, I just think this is a change in traditional media, if you want to call it that. At the end of the day, we’re all individuals that just happened to have a lot of people who are intrigued about our personality. I’ve always had a huge interest in doing voice acting. I’ve done voices in another Netflix show that’s already on. I’ve done a voice for a game that’s on Xbox. Tying the two together has been like a perfect combination.

“I always get weirded out by the word ‘celebrity.’ Even though I’ve been doing this for a long time, I still can’t fully wrap my head around how it’s actually happened. I won’t compare myself to an A-list Hollywood celebrity. But when you go out and you get recognized, especially in Ireland, it always meant a lot more because Ireland, traditionally, has always been a little bit behind the curve of media and the internet.

“But it’s still a little of a weird one for myself, the whole celebrity factor. I just see myself and my friends playing video games together. And a lot of people just like watching us. At first it was definitely an alias kind of thing, a hidden thing that I kept from family and friends and the world. It was just my YouTube alias. And then as it got on, I realized that I wasn’t going to hide this side of me. The internet persona really is me. It might be just dialed up a little bit to 11, but it’s still myself at the end of the day.
