Hitman
Generally speaking, if someone gets a PS4 or an Xbox One, I tell them to get Hitman. Sometimes I tell them to get Hitman 2, but the basic gist is the same: these are some of the best games out this generation full-stop, fascinating board games of intrigue, death and perfectly-tailored pants. Hitman is free on PS4 right now, and you should really go play it.
You don’t have forever to play, however. The game is only free this weekend, until May 3. Afterwards, however, it’s not exactly expensive: Hitman: Game of the Year Edition is only $9, and Hitman 2 is only $18. Both are eminently worth it.
The idea is this: you are Agent 47, a genetically-engineered assassin tasked with infiltrating the enclaves of the ultra-rich, from a high-end resort in Bangkok to a fashion show in a Parisian mansion. You’re welcome in parts of each level, but not the whole thing: to get to where you need to be you’ll need a wealth of tricks, disguises and stealth. The goal is sort of what you make it, but ultimately you want to eliminate a series of targets with as little attention but as much fanfare as possible. Each level comes with a range of scenarios ranging from the straightforward to the outlandish, giving 47 a chance to expose his targets and kill them in poetic ways.
For example: a fashion icon uses models as agents to steal international secrets that she then sells. Find the model on his cell phone, knock him out, take his clothes and get your makeup done to look like his. Use your new look to lure the target into a one-on-one meeting. Poison her drink for the celebratory toast, or just garrote her as soon as she closes the door.
Or, if you want: set off some fireworks to lure both her and her partner out to admire. Push her off the balcony onto your first target, eliminating both. Things are wacky that way.
Each level of Hitman is an intricate machine of interlocking characters and systems just waiting to be thrown into chaos. It’s one the most engrossing series I’ve played in years, and now you can give it a shot for free.
