We’re about to find out which free games Sony is giving away for June.
Like last month, there have been some rumors and leaks swirling about. Unlike last month we already know that Call Of Duty: WWII will be free starting tomorrow, as a sort of stop-gap free game for May and June.
That’s a nice perk given how disappointing May’s free games were, especially compared to the leak.
Right now only one game has leaked for June, and while it would be an incredible free game for PS+ subscribers, you should definitely take it with a grain or two of salt. Maybe a whole tablespoon.
The game in question is Marvel’s Spider-Man from Insomniac Games, one of the best PS4 exclusives out there.
Gamers have spotted the game on the PlayStation Store with a small PS Plus logo next to it, and the price set to free.
This would normally seem like pretty solid evidence that Spider-Man is coming to the PS Plus lineup next month. The problem? The game has just been added to PS Now, and apparently there’s a glitch that sometimes happens when a game is added to that service where the PS Plus logo shows up. This could very likely be that glitch in action.
It’s still possible that we’ll get both Call of Duty: WWII (an excellent World War 2 shooter) and Marvel’s Spider-Man in the same month, with a third game also since WWII isn’t officially a June release. I just wouldn’t get your hopes up.
I gave Marvel’s Spider-Man a 9.5/10 and Call of Duty: WWII a 9/10.
Also, don’t forget that Sony’s big Days of Play sale starts soon. It’s a great time to renew your PS Plus subscription at a hefty discount and pick up some cheap games. In fact, if Spider-Man doesn’t come to PS Plus next month, I bet you’ll be able to pick it up on the cheap during the sale.
Update 5/26
It might be useful to compare some of the biggest games released on PS Plus with their release dates. Marvel’s Spider-Man released on September 7th, 2018. That’s 627 days ago.
Uncharted 4 was just released on PS Plus this April. It came out on May 10th, 2016. That’s 1,477 days ago, give or take the nearly two months since it landed on PS Plus. Still quite a bit longer.
PS4 exclusive Bloodborne landed on PlayStation Plus in March of 2018. That game came out in March of 2015—a three year gap. Not as long between release and PS+ as Uncharted 4 but longer than Spider-Man still if, of course, that is anything other than a glitch.
With Spider-Man less than two years old it seems incredibly unlikely that it’s coming to the service next month. Then again . . .
Detroit Become Human released in May of 2018. The Quantic Dream PS4 exclusive was released on PS Plus in July of 2019. That’s just barely over a year, and less time than between this June and Spider-Man’s release.
In other words, while unlikely it’s still within the realm of possibility. Indeed, if Sony has a PlayStation 5 Spider-Man announcement up its sleeve this summer—reportedly in early June—giving this game away to PS Plus subscribers could be a great way to stoke hype and get people even more excited about the upcoming next-gen console.
Maybe it’s the optimist in me, but I could see that reality, even if I don’t think it’s likely. I’d love to hear about a new Spider-Man game on PS5, that’s for sure.
Of course, I already own Marvel’s Spider-Man so it being released as a PS Plus game doesn’t effect me one way or another, but I know lots of people have probably not played it and that’s a shame. It’s too good to miss.
Update 5/27
A second game for June has leaked ahead of Sony’s official announcement, which has yet to be made.
If true, this second game would release alongside the already-released Call of Duty: WWII, meaning those would be the only games for June, even though WWII actually came to PS Plus in May.
That would mean, that if this leak is true the Spider-Man leak is false. It could also be that the Spider-Man leak is just a glitch and that this latest leak is simply false.
The game in question? Star Wars: Battlefront II.
This comes via Reddit and a brief ad, though whether the ad is real or fake remains to be seen and everything should still be taken with a grain of salt and then more salt. Many grains, a whole heaping spoonful.
This would be an odd mix. Not only did everyone assume Call Of Duty: WWII was an extra bonus game, and that we’d get two more titles in June, both these games are competitive first-person shooters.
Granted, one is a Star Wars game and one is a historical WWII game, but both involve mostly shooting other players. The maps in Battlefront II are much bigger, and there are more vehicles, but I vastly prefer the gameplay in WWII.
So they’re very different titles, but they’re also very similar and we usually—but not always—get more variety from Sony.
Of course, as recently as this month that wasn’t the case, with Sony releasing a city building sim and a farming sim all at the same time. So nothing would surprise me anymore.
