Top Performances Countdown: Brown's Huge Game Takes Down No. 24 ASU - CUBuffs.com

The Buffs were 2-1 heading into their first true road game, a tall test at 24th-ranked Arizona State. After three emotional rivalry games that included wins over Colorado State and Nebraska, CU was facing its most talented opponent yet on the road.

Furthermore, star wide receiver Laviska Shenault Jr. went down with an injury on the game's first drive. Shenault had scored all four touchdowns in CU's 28-21 win over the Sun Devils in 2018.

But no worries, Mr. Reliable Tony Brown was ready to step up again. Two weeks after the biggest catch of his career, a game-tying touchdown in the final minute of regulation in the overtime victory against Nebraska, Brown had even bigger plans in store for the ASU game.

The senior hauled in nine catches for 150 yards and three touchdowns, leading the Buffs to a 34-31 win over ASU. All three of his totals were career highs at the time (he surpassed his career high in catches with 10 two weeks later against Arizona) and his three scores tied the school record for touchdown catches in one game.

CU needed a fast start and got it from Brown. He had a first-down catch on the first drive of the game, setting up a one-yard touchdown run by Alex Fontenot for a 7-0 lead. After ASU missed a field goal, Brown put the Buffs up 14-0 with a 29-yard touchdown reception from Steven Montez.

The Sun Devils tied the game 14-14 early in the second quarter, but Brown and Montez answered right back, this time with a 31-yard connection for a 21-14 lead.

Tied 24-24 in the third quarter, CU again broke the tie with a Brown-Montez touchdown, a 20-yard strike with 1:10 remaining in the quarter.

Once again, ASU responded to tie the game in the fourth quarter, but Brown helped set up the game-winning field goal by James Stefanou with two catches for 23 yards on the drive before the 44-yard kick put the Buffs up 34-31 with 2:03 left in the game. This time, the defense held strong to preserve the victory.

Brown finished the season with 56 catches (tied for the team lead) for 707 yards and a team-high five touchdown receptions. He was named honorable mention All-Pac-12 and awaits this week's NFL Draft to see where he will play next season.
