Michigan’s retro Tecmo Super Bowl video game tourney won in thrilling finish by Chicago man - MLive.com

DETROIT - One man’s astounding victory was another man’s devastating defeat. Michigan has crowned its 2020 retro Tecmo Super Bowl video game champion in dramatic fashion.

It was 1991 all over again at this 8th annual tournament. Analog TVs were aplenty accompanied by a dozen vintage Nintendo entertainment systems with the old 1991 Tecmo Super Bowl football game cartridges. And don’t forget those controllers with the two red buttons, some working better than others due to old age.

Dozens of people from Michigan and mainly the Midwest and Canada came to Bookies in Detroit on Saturday, March 6 for this event to see who could bring home the trophy and prize money. That person was Chicago’s Francis Buennagel, who also won this event six years ago. His drive home was a lot sweeter after he caught a Hail Mary touchdown pass as time expired to win the championship 24-17 with Cincinnati over Miami.

“I was up 17-3, but in the second half, his conditionings changed. His receivers were getting open. Dan Marino is a great quarterback. That lead him back with 14 unanswered points,” said Buennagel, who also runs the YouTube channel Retro Sports Gamer which broadcasts live at this event. “On the last play, he blitzed. At the last second, I went deep. My guy caught a jump pass. With no human player in sight, I avoided two drones and ran it into the end zone."

Just when his opponent, Eric Kuhlman of Lima, Ohio, thought the game would go into overtime after his great 4th quarter comeback, his tourney ended after a nice run of upsets in the playoffs.

“I felt like if I would have lost the game that he would have outplayed me or Marino would have been unstoppable," added Buennagel. "Unfortunately for Kuhlman, he probably shouldn’t have blitzed and tested his luck in overtime. If he had won the overtime coin toss, the way Mario was pitching it, I may not have won no matter what I did.”

There were two different tournaments at this year’s event. The main championship event, and a beginner/intermediate tourney won by Josh Allison of London, Ontario over David Fiedor of Wixom, Michigan. Allison has played in nearly every Detroit Tecmo Bowl tourney. This was his first ever championship. This was Fiedor’s first time giving this tourney a shot.

“I have a very specific way that I play. I start out the tournament playing exactly the way that I play. When I start to find the competition adapting, I change," said Allison. “But, I didn’t change all day today.”

Each player in both tourneys played five qualifying games. Then, each person drafted a team for the playoffs based on where they were seeded with the highest teams drafting first. The playoffs were single elimination. The tournament also featured a raffle for numerous retro football and video game related prizes.
