Graduate transfers Justin Pierce and Christian Keeling came alive in the first half to help stars Cole Anthony and Garrison Brooks as North Carolina took a 44-35 lead over rival Duke into halftime.
Pierce scored five points and Keeling added six. Pierce's buckets came in the last two minutes of the half as Brooks sat with two fouls and as Duke made a brief run.
If not for six missed free throws, North Carolina would have carried an even larger lead into halftime against the No 7 Blue Devils. Even with a 5-for-11 clip from the charity stripe, it was an impressive showing in the first 20 minutes for UNC, which made 19-of-32 shots in the frame.
Freshman guard Cole Anthony led the Tar Heels with 10 points in the half. After Duke cut its deficit to three points, Anthony answered with an and-1 floater.
Duke's defense struggled, but Vernon Carey was virtually unstoppable on offense. The freshman forward scored 18 points in 17 minutes to pace the Blue Devils, who changed up their starting lineup by adding Wendell Moore Jr. and Jack White and taking out Matthew Hurt and Jordan Goldwire.
