All the Big Games Coming in 2020

Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot

Release Date: January 17 | Platform(s): PS4, Xbox One, PC

As it stands, Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot is the first big, AAA release of 2020. As a fully fledged action-RPG, Kakarot adds character levels, NPCs, sidequests, and more, while largely maintaining the combat system from previous 3D Dragon Ball fighting games.

Darksiders Genesis

Release Date: February 14 | Platform(s): PS4, Xbox One, Switch, PC, Stadia

Despite its new top-down perspective, Genesis will be familiar to longtime Darksiders fans, thanks to its "intense combat, exploration, puzzle-solving, epic boss battles and serpent holes from heaven to hell." Genesis also features two-player co-op, with each player controlling one of two Horsemen of the Apocalypse, War or Strife.

Marvel’s Iron Man VR

Release Date: February 28 | Platform(s): PS4 (PSVR)

Following the success of 2018’s Spider-Man, Sony and Marvel have once again teamed up for Iron Man VR. With your PlayStation Move controllers serving as palm thrusters, Iron Man VR takes you to the skies for superhero-inspired aerial combat and chase sequences.

Final Fantasy VII Remake

Release Date: March 3 | Platform(s): PS4

Five long years after its E3 2015 reveal, Final Fantasy VII Remake — rather its first “episode” — will be released on March 3. It requires two Blu-ray discs and covers the Midgar portion of the original.

Ori and the Will of the Wisps

Release Date: February 11 | Platform(s): Xbox One, PC

With a beautifully designed world, tight controls, exceptional soundtrack, and heartfelt story, Ori and the Blind Forest was one of the biggest surprises of 2015. Five years later, Moon Studios is following it up with Will of the Wisps, and it looks every bit as brilliant as the original.

Nioh 2

Release Date: March 13 | Platform(s): PS4

The sequel to Team Ninja’s excellent action-RPG hits shelves on March 13. IGN called the original “an epic, unforgettable adventure carried by a fierce combat system that cleverly balances style and strategy.”

Doom Eternal

Release Date: March 20 | Platform(s): PS4, Xbox One, PC, Stadia

Originally expected in Fall 2019, Doom Eternal was delayed into March 2020 to give developer id Software time to live up to its “standards of speed and polish.” A Switch version is also in development, though it will be released at a later, unspecified date.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Release Date: March 20 | Platform(s): Switch

Animal Crossing returns in March with New Horizons, the series’ first mainline release since New Leaf in 2013. Like Doom, New Horizons was initially slated for 2019, but was pushed by Nintendo to “ensure the game is the best it can be.”

Release Date: March 24 | Platform(s): Xbox One, PC

Bleeding Edge, the first game from Hellblade developer Ninja Theory since being acquired by Microsoft, will be released in late April. A closed beta for the competitive multiplayer game will begin on February 14.

Half-Life: Alyx

Release Date: March 2020 | Platform(s): All PC-based VR headsets

Half-Life: Alyx, the first new Half-Life in over twelve years, will be released in March 2020. Alyx is a full-length VR game set between Half-Life 1 and 2. Despite the new platform, the series' core gameplay formula — exploration, puzzles, and combat — remains intact. It'll be comparable in length to Half-Life 2, according to Valve.

Resident Evil 3 Remake

Release Date: April 3 | Platform(s): PS4, Xbox One, PC

Coming off the success of 2019's excellent remake of Resident Evil 2, Capcom will release Resident Evil 3 Remake on April 16. RE 3 will also include Project Resistance, the previously announced asymmetrical multiplayer take on the series.

Cyberpunk 2077

Release Date: April 16 | Platform(s): PS4, Xbox One, PC, Stadia

Coming off an all-time great RPG, CD Projekt Red will release its next epic in mid-April. It’s perhaps the most hyped game of 2020, and for good reason: CD Projekt said Cyberpunk 2077 is “far bigger” and “even more ambitious” than The Witcher 3.

Minecraft Dungeons

Release Date: April 2020 | Platform(s): PS4, Xbox One, Switch, PC

This spinoff brings isometric dungeon crawling to the world of Minecraft. Featuring four-player co-op (local and online), Minecraft Dungeons will launch on Xbox One and PC as part of Xbox Game Pass.

Marvel’s Avengers

Release Date: May 15 | Platform(s): PS4, Xbox One, PC, Stadia

Another of 2020’s biggest blockbusters, Marvel’s Avengers takes players into the beloved comic book world through the eyes of six playable heroes: Hulk, Captain America, Iron Man, Black Widow, Thor, and Kamala Khan. It features single-player, story-based Hero Missions, as well as co-op friendly Warzone Missions.

Wasteland 3

Release Date: May 19 | Platform(s): PS4, Xbox One, PC

The 30-year-old, turn-based RPG franchise returns for its third entry in 2020. Wasteland 3 will launch as part of Xbox Game Pass on Xbox One and PC. A PS4 version will be released as well, despite developer inXile being acquired by Microsoft in 2018.

The Last of Us Part II

Release Date: May 29 | Platform(s): PS4

The long-awaited followup to one of the (if not the) best games of the PS3-360 generation, The Last of Us Part II continues the story of Ellie and Joel. This time, however, you’ll play as Ellie across what Naughty Dog calls “by far” its biggest game ever.

Roller Champions

Release Date: “Early” 2020 | Platform(s): PC

Following its pre-E3 leak, Ubisoft revealed Roller Champions as a competitive, 3v3 multiplayer game for PC. Roller Champions and its roller-derby-inspired gameplay will be free to play when it launches in early 2020.

Disintegration

Release Date: Late Q1/Early Q2 2020 | Platform(s): PS4, Xbox One, PC

Disintegration is a sci-fi FPS from Halo co-creator Marcus Lehto. The shooter blends first-person gameplay and RTS mechanics, and features both a single-player campaign and PvP multiplayer.

Dying Light 2

Release Date: Spring 2020 | Platform(s): PS4, Xbox One, PC

Following up on the success of the 2015 original, Techland will return to the world of Dying Light in 2020. The sequel introduces twice the amount of parkour moves compared to the original and increased consequences for player decisions.

Vampire: The Masquerade — Bloodlines 2

Release Date: Q2-Q4 2020 | Platform(s): PS4, Xbox One, PC

Vampire: The Masquerade — Bloodlines 2 will come 16 years after the release of the original cult RPG and take the series up the West Coast, from Los Angeles to Seattle. It was originally dated for early 2020, but was delayed to later in the year, as developer Hardsuit Labs “decided to value quality over making the Q1 launch window.”

Ghost of Tsushima

Release Date: Summer 2020 | Platform(s): PS4

Ghost of Tsushima will be released in Summer 2020, ahead of PlayStation 5's holiday launch. Ghost will be "the biggest game Sucker Punch has ever made by a wide margin," according to Sony.

Outriders

Release Date: Summer 2020 | Platform(s): PS4, Xbox One, PC

The next game from Bulletstorm developer People Can Fly, Outriders is a third-person shooter set in a "dark and desperate sci-fi universe.” It’s designed for 1-3 players and features drop-in, drop-out cooperative multiplayer.

Halo Infinite

Release Date: Holiday 2020 | Platform(s): Xbox Series X, Xbox One, PC

The Xbox brand’s most notable mascot, Master Chief, will help Microsoft usher in its next generation of console hardware in Holiday 2020. While Halo Infinite will be a Project Scarlett launch title, Xbox One and PC versions will also be released. 343’s Bonnie Ross said Infinite is a “spiritual reboot” for the beloved franchise.

Bravely Default 2

Release Date: 2020 | Platform(s): Switch

Bravely Default 2, a sequel to the 2012 3DS exclusive, was announced during The Game Awards 2019. "Expect a brand-new world, new Heroes of Light, and music from Revo," Nintendo said of the sequel.

Crossfire X

Release Date: 2020 | Platform(s): Xbox One

Crossfire, the ultra-popular PC shooter that's seen 650 million registered players throughout its 10-year history, is coming to console for the first time as CrossfireX. Developed by Smilegate in partnership with Remedy (Control, Alan Wake), CrossfireX will come “first to Xbox One” in 2020.

Deadly Premonition 2: A Blessing in Disguise

Release Date: 2020 | Platform(s): Switch

The biggest surprise of Nintendo’s September 2019 Direct was the announcement of Deadly Premonition 2, a follow-up to the bizarre 2010 cult classic. The story is split between two timelines, 2019 Boston and 2005 New Orleans, and tells a converging tale of two FBI agents.

Godfall

Release Date: 2020 | Platform(s): PS5, PC

Godfall was announced for PlayStation 5 and PC during The Game Awards 2019. It's described as a "looter-slasher" that's playable solo or with up to two others. It will be an Epic Games Store exclusive on PC.

LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga

Release Date: 2020 | Platform(s): PS4, Xbox One, Switch, PC

Skywalker Saga is the most ambitious LEGO Star Wars game to date. It features levels from all nine mainline Star Wars movies, including 2019’s Rise of Skywalker, and the series' deepest roster of playable characters: Luke, Rey, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Finn, BB-8, Darth Vader, Emperor Palpatine, Kylo Ren, and more.

Medal of Honor: Above and Beyond

Release Date: 2020 | Platform(s): PC (Rift)

After an eight-year hiatus, Medal of Honor is back with Above and Beyond, a VR shooter from Apex Legends and Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order developer Respawn Entertainment. Above and Beyond features a 10-12-hour campaign set during World War II.

Microsoft Flight Simulator

Release Date: 2020 | Platform(s): Xbox One, PC

Microsoft Flight Simulator is shaping up to be one of 2020’s most gorgeous, technically impressive games. Flight Simulator allows you to visit any location on Earth, as it pulls from Bing satellite data in real time. It will launch as part of Xbox Game Pass on Xbox One and PC.

No More Heroes 3

Release Date: 2020 | Platform(s): Switch

No More Heroes 3 was revealed as a Switch exclusive during E3 2019. As expected, Travis Touchdown and his beam katana both return for another round of hack-and-slash gameplay and meta video game humor.

Predator: Hunting Grounds

Release Date: 2020 | Platform(s): PS4

Predator: Hunting Grounds is an asymmetrical multiplayer game in which one player controls the titular Predator and four others control human soldiers. It’s being developed by Illfonic, the studio behind another recent, licensed asymmetrical game, Friday the 13th.

Psychonauts 2

Release Date: 2020 | Platform(s): PS4, Xbox One, PC

It’s been a long wait for Psychonauts 2. The Double Fine sequel was initially revealed in 2015 and became a massive success on Fig, handily surpassing its $3.3 million USD crowdfunding goal. Like Wasteland 3, Psychonauts 2 will still be released on PS4, despite the studio being acquired by Microsoft in 2019.

System Shock Remastered

Release Date: 2020 | Platform(s): PS4, Xbox One, PC

The sci-fi horror classic that’d go on to inspire games like BioShock and Prey returns in 2020 as a “complete remake” of the 1994 original. Nightdive Studios is working with past System Shock developers to ensure its modern take is “as true to the original as possible.”

Tales of Arise

Release Date: 2020 | Platform(s): PS4, Xbox One, PC

The next game in Bandai Namco’s Tales series comes to PS4, Xbox One, and PC in 2020. The series is coming off a high note in 2017’s Tales of Beseria, which IGN said it is “among the most emotional and darkest of this long-running RPG series.”

This tentative 2020 lineup paints a bright picture for the next year of games. Add in other potential releases — Watch Dogs Legion, Rainbow Six Quarantine, Gods and Monsters, Skull & Bones, and Kerbal Space Program 2 are all slated for unspecified dates between April 2020 and March 2021 — and 2020 would be an exceptional bookend to the PS4-Xbox One era.
