Black cat interrupts play during Dallas Cowboys-New York Giants Monday Night Football game - USA TODAY

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Maybe there’s an explanation for the sluggish start the Dallas Cowboys had against the New York Giants, if you’re superstitious.

In the middle of the second quarter of Monday night’s game, a black cat ran out onto the field and scampered around, momentarily halting play.

With 5:32 left to play in the first half, the cat ran onto the field and looked as if it was scared and confused by the lights and the noise of the crowd. The fans, seeing the cat, started to cheer as it tried to find a way out.

Officials blew their whistles in the middle of a New York Giants offensive drive, and called for play to be halted. Security personnel working the game and New Jersey state troopers all tried to corral the cat, as it tried to find a quieter place.

"Yeah, that was strange," Giants quarterback Daniel Jones said. "I didn’t exactly know what was going on at first. But, yeah, you don’t see that every week."

Eventually, and with guidance from security personnel on the field and near the cat, it fled through a tunnel in the Southwest corner of MetLife Stadium.

"You know what, I was kinda happy about that because it came around the time that my knee was hurting so I was thinking I had a little bit more time to get this thing right," Cowboys receiver Amari Cooper said.

Once the cat left the field, play resumed. The Giants drive eventually ended with an Adrick Rosas field goal that put the Giants up 12-3. Perhaps the black cat helped the Cowboys overcome their sluggest start. Dallas went on to beat New York, 37-18.

"The first thing that crossed my mind was like: '(Expletive), they got bad luck now. It just turned on them,'" Cowboys defensive end Demarcus Lawrence said after the game. "I was like: 'Man, the game over.' If a black cat runs on the damn field on a 'Monday Night Football' game, a black cat, you might want to call it quits, bro. Y'all's luck is terrible.

"I hate cats, too, so I was like '(expletive), (expletive), (expletive). Hurry up and get this cat before it gets to me.'"
