I have finally hit level 50 on all four vault hunters in Borderlands 3, and my final character I brought up to max was Moze, the Gunner. And I think she’s the strongest in the game by quite a wide margin.
Moze is so strong I wonder if Gearbox might actually consider some of her skills bugged, but until that happens, here is what I would deem the best build for the best character in the game. Nothing can beat the boss burning times of FL4K’s fade away crit build, but for general Mayhem play, I think this Moze build is the best by far. It relies on grenades and the world’s biggest shield and could be the most fun you have playing Borderlands 3 as you quite literally…can’t die. Here we go.
Orange Tree
Despite the fact that you don’t take this tree all the way to the end, I think it’s good to start here, personally, as the defensiveness (and later, offensiveness) this tree gives you is better for the early game when you’re still just leveling in a normal story playthrough. This tree will give you big buffs to your shield, both in terms of capacity and damage reduction, and you will also get bonus damage from skills like Drowning in Brass and Phalanx Doctrine. For both this and the other tree, keep in mind that this is a build that doesn’t use your mech at all so you don’t want any points in anything for it (the mech needs serious buffs for higher Mayhems).
Blue Tree
Here’s where things get wild. When you max out this tree you have grenades that can crit, double their explosion size, heal you and give you…more grenades. Combine that with a very particular grenade, artifact and class mod, which I will get to in a minute, and you have the core of why you can never die in this build and do unlimited damage with an endless supply of grenades.
Guns
Everyone has their own picks here, but for my money, I really love the Torgue Laser-Sploder which is practically like firing two guns at the same time, a stream of elemental energy and a bunch of rockets that proc all your splash damage skills. Also good for this build is The Duc, the sticky bomb revolver, and Flakker, the super explosion gun that may be the most powerful in the game, but even more so when combined will all of Moze’s explosion-based skill. This thing even melts Anointeds.
Artifact
The Deathless artifact gives you 1 HP at all times, but it doubles your shield size and increases your regen rate and reduces your shield delay. This sounds very risky, but then you have to combine it with the Class Mod and Grenade, which are the three core pieces of this build.
Class Mod
I’m not sure if this is called the Honor Guard or the Bloodletter, but what it does is takes any healing you would get for your health bar and applies it to your shield instead. See how this is starting to come together? And finally:
Grenade
The Storm Front grenade is the final piece of the puzzle. It spawns a zillion lightning-spewing grenades, which each count as their own, individual grenade. That means you are constantly getting both grenades back from the one skill and then healing your shield with the other skill combined with the class mod. You have a 40,000+ strong shield that is constantly getting healed at all times. I could foresee a possible Storm Front nerf in the future, but for now, it’s god tier. All three of these pieces can drop from anywhere, not any specific bosses.
Shield
Ironically the shield is not as important as the other parts of this build. I have seen people use the Amped Re-Router shield for big damage on Flakker shots, but I personally like using the Transformer shield as it’s 100% shock resistance, making you immune from both enemy shock damage but also any of your own grenades spewing lighting all around you at all times. This is personal preference however, so try out a few and see what you like.
The gist of this build is throwing about 30 grenades every encounter, lighting up the room with lightning and using splash damage weapons to clean up the rest. On the rare occasion you get one-bursted somehow, you can easily revive yourself by…throwing more grenades in Last Stand. I have never actually fully died when using this build in any Mayhem mode.
This build is just a monster. I would love for a mech-based build to be this strong, but we’re simply not there yet. Until then, I genuinely think this is the best build in the game for any class.
