More PC Gamers Will Shift to iOS and Android Games in 2019 - SegmentNext

It is hard to believe but more PC gamers will switch to Android and iOS games in 2019. According to Newzoo, this shift of PC gamers to Android and iOS games will result in a 15% revenue drop for the PC gaming market.

As we reported before, the latest Global Games Market report predicts that the gaming industry market will generate $152.1 billion in 2019, up 9.6% from the last year. 23% of this total worldwide gaming revenue will come from the PC gaming sector with a total contribution of $35.7Bn in 2019. On the other hand, mobile games will contribute $68.5Bn or 45% to the overall predicted gaming revenue in 2019.

Mobile gaming (smartphone and tablet), meanwhile, remains the largest segment in 2019, growing +10.2% year on year to $68.5 billion—45% of the global games market. Of this, $54.9 billion will come from smartphone games. PC gaming will be both the smallest and slowest-growing segment, increasing +4.0% year on year to $35.7 billion

The rapid rise of the mobile gaming market might surprise some people but it was well expected to happen. That’s because we have seen some of the biggest gaming publishers to focus on the mobile gaming market in the last few years. For those who don’t know, developers like Activision, EA, Epic Games, and Tencent have contributed a lot to the mobile games market in recent years.

Games like Fortnite, Bethesda’s Fallout Shelter, The Elder Scrolls Blades and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds (PUBG) are some examples of the most played games on mobile phones.

We are expecting further growth in the mobile gaming market in 2019 and 2020 from upcoming iOS and Android mobile games like Diablo Immortal, Call of Duty mobile, Forza Street, Minecraft Earth and more. These aforementioned IPs were once exclusive to PC and consoles.

Of course, many PC Gamers are not happy with the shift of developers towards mobile gaming. We recently saw a backlash for Blizzard and NetEase’s Diablo Immortal. That’s because PC Gamers did not expect the next Diablo title to be a mobile game. Mobile games based on popular IPs are usually barebone experiences.

The good news is that as mobile devices get better hardware we will see much bigger and more high-quality mobile games in the near future.

Soon there will be no need of an expensive PC to play games with the launch of video game streaming services on mobile. For example, Microsoft’s Project xCloud and Google’s Stadia will allow the players to experience console and PC AAA games on mobile devices.

Games like Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, Doom Eternal, Forza Games, Destiny 2 and more are some of the confirmed games on mobile devices with upcoming streaming services.  Moreover, players will have the ability to play their favorite console and PC games on mobile devices with an Xbox One or Google Stadia controller.

In short, Newzoo’s latest report on the Global Gaming Market predicts a bright for the mobile gaming market. Mobile gaming will continue to overshadow PC gaming in 2019.
