Avengers: Endgame and the Season 8 premiere of Game of Thrones both landed on the same weekend this past April. Since then, both have been the talk of the town.
Endgame has quickly become one of the highest and fastest-grossing movies of all time at the box office, breezing past $2 billion globally this weekend, and Season 8 of Game of Thrones has returned the show to its former glory, though last weekend's episode 'The Long Night' has been met with a surprising amount of controversy.
So it's only fitting that Saturday Night Live should bring the two together for a Family Feud cold open last night, poking fun at both these pop-culture phenomenons. Check it out:
The cold open begins as a C-Span broadcast that was supposed to show Attorney General William Barr before the House Judiciary Committee, but since he didn't show up they decided to show "the two things all Americans can get behind": Game of Thrones and the Avengers.
Enter Kenan Thompson as Celebrity Family Feud host, Steve Harvey. He introduces us to our contestants. He introduces the Avengers first, "Because this show is just like they movies, we gonna open with 45 minutes of introductions."
On The Avengers side we have:
- Thor (Alex Moffat) "the sexiest man at a Renaissance Fair"
- Thanos (Beck Bennett) aka "swole Grimace"
- Okoye (Ego Nwodim, really looking like a Danai Gurira double) or "Okie-Dokie"
- Groot (Leslie Jones) "b!*$#, I'm Groot"
Thompson moves to the Game of Thrones side of the room, getting a little dig in on the Battle of Winterfell in the process. “I gotta be honest, I didn’t see the last episode. I watched it, but I couldn’t see it. You know it’s dark when you can’t even see the white people."
From Westeros we have:
- Lady Brienne of Tarth (Kate McKinnon) "actually it's Ser Brienne"
- Tormund Giantsbane (Mikey Day) who regales us once again with his backstory
- Melisandre (Cecily Strong) "maybe it's magic, maybe it's Maybelline"
- Bran Stark (Kyle Mooney) the "weird brother"
Probably the best part of the sketch is when Brienne and Thor face-off in the opening round. Thompson/Harvey asks each of them to name something on their bucket list. Thor has to think about it, but Brienne is quick to the buzzer.
“Jamie Lannister, one night, three hands, no rules," she says, grinning.
"Show me...trying to creep with your freaky friend," Thompson says, but it's not on the board.
Thor gives his answer: "I must reforge the Rainbow Bridge to the shining city of Valhalla."
"Okay, show me...some kind of white nonsense!" Thompson says, and "Travel" pops up on the board, giving the Avengers an early lead.
Of course, Arya (Melissa Villaseñor) shows up out of nowhere, in the nick of time, to win the whole thing for Game of Thrones. "Steve," she says. "As the battle approaches and you stare into an endless night, there is but one thing a girl must do."
"Oh say no more," Thompson says. "I saw what you did in that episode. Show me . . . gettin' that booty!"
Ding ding ding. Game of Thrones for the win. Good stuff, SNL, though all this talk of things coming to an end is a little bittersweet.
