Game of Thrones S8 episode 4 time, how to stream & what to know - Polygon

The final season of Game of Thrones is now halfway over. There are only three episodes left in HBO’s epic fantasy saga, which should be plenty of time for more of the deaths, betrayals, and gratuitous sex scenes the show’s known for.

Every week leading up to the finale, we’ll be diving deep into what happened each episode with recaps and watchthroughs, answering your questions and posing a few of our own, and of course reminding you where and when to watch live.

Episode 3 recap: The Long Night

HBO

Episodes 1 and 2 set the stage for the massive Battle of Winterfell that consumed most of the 82 minute runtime. Despite that extended planning period, the strategy employed by Jon and Daenerys’ forces hinged on throwing their forces at the Night King’s assembled horde rather than, you know, flying dragons over their enemies that can be destroyed by fire.

Winterfell is quickly overrun with wights, briefly turning the fantasy show into a horror movie as Arya creeps through the library trying to remain unseen by the zombies roaming the stacks. When the Night King arrives, he somehow walks through dragon fire unscathed, and raises the dead throughout Winterfell’s grounds, including the dead Starks buried underground. It turned out that the crypts were decidedly not the safest place in Winterfell. Tyrion and Sansa hide while wights break out of their coffins.

Despite the baffling choices made by our heroes, the Battle of Winterfell was much less deadly than we were expecting, though we still lost some important characters that deserve to be recognized. Dolorous Edd died saving his friend Sam, while Beric Dondarrion held wights off so that The Hound and Arya could escape. Lyanna Mormont brought down a giant before being crushed to death in his hands. Melisandre walks out into the snow drifts to die now that the Lord of Light is done with her. Theon Greyjoy completes his redemption arc, rushing the Night King in a last ditch effort to protect Bran. And Jorah Mormont dies in the arms of his unrequited love, Queen Daenerys, after fighting through to the end.

Of course, the biggest death was the leader of the Army of the Dead himself. In the most shocking moment of the episode, Arya appeared out of nowhere to assassinate the Night King with a Dragonglass dagger that may or may not be the very shard that the Children of the Forest used to create him. As the creator of the White Walkers and wights, his death caused the reanimating force to dissipate, ending the battle against the dead for good.

What to expect in episode 4

The episode 4 preview sees the army of Ice and Fire preparing to face Cersei’s army. Daenerys promises that “We have won the great war, now we will win the last war,” a nod to her crusade to “break the wheel” and quell any further power struggles among the great houses of Westeros.

Don’t expect a confrontation just yet, though. The remaining forces at Winterfell are hurting, and they’ll need to regroup before another major battle. From the preview, it looks like Jon is going to burn the dead who fell against the Night King. Whether there’s still concern about the dead rising or that’s just the fastest way to perform a mass funeral is unclear.

In King’s Landing, Cersei smugly surveys her troops with Euron Greyjoy close at hand. Will we find out the status of her pregnancy and/or her engagement to commander of the Ironborn? It seems likely, based on a quick shot of Euron down on one knee. Jaime’s reaction to their relationship will surely be a major indicator of how far he’s come in consciously uncoupling himself from his sister-lover.

Here’s hoping Jon and Dany will think a little more strategically about the battle at King’s Landing than they did the Battle of Winterfell. Cersei may not have an army of undead at her disposal, but she does have Euron’s considerable navy and a dragon-killing crossbow designed by Qyburn.

Where to watch season 8, episode 4

Episode 4 will air on HBO and (drop onto streaming services) at 9 p.m. ET on Sunday, May 5. Here’s all the ways to watch Game of Thrones, whether directly from HBO or as a streaming service add-on.

HBO GO

Those who subscribe to HBO through a cable or satellite package can stream Game of Thrones live or on demand via the HBO Go service. The HBO Go app is available on most phones, tablets, smart TVs, and gaming consoles. Check if your device is supported at HBO’s Help Center.

HBO Now

Cord cutters can still watch HBO on the network’s own platform. HBO Now is a stand-alone service, so it doesn’t require a cable subscription or another streaming platform; you stream directly from the HBO Now website or app. A one-week free trial is available — after that, it’s $14.99 per month.

Hulu

Hulu also offers an HBO add-on for $14.99, which allows live HBO streaming whether or not you subscribe to Hulu’s live TV subscription tier. Subscribing through Hulu, or any other streaming service, also grants access to HBO Now.

Amazon Channels

In addition to the TV shows and movies available free to Prime members, Amazon offers add-on premium subscriptions through the Amazon Channels program. The HBO add-on costs $14.99 per month (the same as HBO Now).

PlayStation Vue

Sony’s own TV subscription service, PlayStation Vue, is another streaming option. HBO is available as an add-on to a multi-channel package or as a stand-alone subscription. It costs $14.99 per month either way. The PlayStation Vue Ultra package, which costs $79.99 per month, includes HBO and Showtime.

DirecTV Now

AT&T’s streaming service is the only subscription that includes HBO at its base level, though at $50 per month, it’s the most expensive plan on the market. Because DirecTV Now operates more like a traditional cable package, subscribers have access to HBO Go, rather than HBO Now.
