Game of Thrones “Addict” Ryan Reynolds Says the Battle of Winterfell Made Him “Weep” - Vanity Fair

Things are about to get even livelier for Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively. The Gossip Girl alum surprised guests at the New York premiere of her husband’s film Pokémon Detective Pikachu on Thursday by revealing that she is pregnant with their third child. Lively stepped onto the arrivals carpet and debuted her baby bump in a yellow sequin Retrofête Rebecca slip gown, with Reynolds by her side. The couple did not speak about the pregnancy, but proudly posed for pictures together with Lively resting her hand on her growing belly.

Ahead of the baby reveal, Reynolds first arrived solo at the premiere, held in the middle of Times Square. The Deadpool star chatted with Vanity Fair about starring in the first live-action Pokémon movie as Pikachu, the most popular character from a global phenomenon that has spanned multiple generations—from trading-card games to animated series, apps, and video games.

In Detective Pikachu—out May 10— Reynolds voices the titular yellow pocket monster, who is capable of shooting electricity out of his furry body. Much like the sarcastic and profanity-spewing Deadpool, Reynolds’s Pikachu lets him show off his ability to take on wildly silly, over-the-top dialogue and occasionally infuse it with heartfelt emotion. Off-screen, Reynolds said he might have had a bit of trouble letting go of Pikachu and Deadpool’s wry, razor-sharp tongues, unintentionally using adult language in front of his two daughters: James, four, and Inez, two.

“There are times where I didn’t know they were home yet, or they were standing in a corner, and I accidentally said a bad word, like ‘fuck,’ in a lighthearted way,” said Reynolds. “I think most parents go through that. But we keep it pretty clean at my house, and even on set. We bring our kids to the set—but when I was shooting Deadpool, I never brought them when I was doing something gnarly. The thing that freaks them out is the makeup. The style makeup they don’t like.”

Protecting his children from violent and gruesome images is a top priority for Reynolds. So when he watches his favorite series, Game of Thrones, he makes sure his little girls are asleep or nowhere near the television. The self-described Thrones “addict” anxiously waited for the final season to arrive, and is “all caught up, happily,” with every new episode that has aired. Like all fans around the world, Reynolds was captivated by last Sunday’s jaw-dropping episode, in which Arya Stark killed the Night King. Her stealth approach—fatally stabbing the Night King in the gut with her Valyrian steel dagger—left Reynolds in shock.

“I just went, ‘Whoa!’“ Reynolds recalled of the pivotal scene. “It was one of the best moments of television history. It was epic and executed beautifully.”

As for the heartbreaking deaths of Theon Greyjoy and Ser Jorah Mormont, who both were killed in the Battle of Winterfell, Reynolds couldn’t hide his emotions for the dearly departed characters.

“There may have been some tears,” he said. “I was weeping!”
